Our Story

Hi! That’s me and my wife, Abby.
When we first moved in together, we ran into a problem that drove me crazy.
She’d open the fridge, look at everything inside, and say, “We have nothing to eat.”
Meanwhile, the fridge was completely full.
At first, I didn’t get it. But after hearing it enough times, I realized what she actually meant was, “Nothing sounds good.”
That was the moment everything clicked.
The problem wasn’t that we didn’t have food. We had plenty of ingredients. We just didn’t know what to make with them.
So I started looking for solutions.
I found that ChatGPT was surprisingly good at suggesting recipes based on the ingredients I already had. It worked great… for a while.
Then I noticed something else.
Our groceries were still expiring before we had a chance to use them.
Every expired avocado, bag of spinach, or forgotten yogurt wasn’t just food going to waste. It was money going straight into the trash.
So I searched for apps that could help me keep track of everything.
There were a lot of them.
The problem? Every single one expected me to manually log every item I bought, update quantities, and delete things as I used them.
I don’t know about you, but I think that’s boring.
If a system takes more work than the problem it’s trying to solve, people just won’t use it.
So I built the system that I wished existed.
I created a camera that automatically keeps track of what’s in my pantry and fridge, and paired it with an app that instantly finds recipes based on what I already have.
When I showed it to friends, they thought it was the coolest thing ever. They kept telling me, “You have to turn this into a real product.”
So… I did.
That’s how Calfo was born.
My goal is simple: help people waste less food, save more money, and spend less time wondering what to cook.
If you’re here, thank you. I hope Calfo becomes one of those apps you wonder how you ever lived without.
Welcome to the Calfo community.
